The Department of Mechanical Engineering had its inception on 28th of July 2004 with an initial intake of just 40 students, under the guidance of Mr. Tomy Joseph and Dr. Jippu Jacob along with the experienced hands from the Advisory Board and the Academic Council of AJCE. The department gradually flourished, nourishing young minds by the team work of dynamic and experienced faculty members who paved the roads of success. In the year 2009, the department expanded it’s horizon with a PG course in Machine Design (18 seats) and further in 2011, increased the B.Tech. intake to 120 students aided with “state–of-the-art” Laboratories and Computational facilities in all core fields of Mechanical Engineering.
Apart from the regular academic curriculum, the Department also give prime importance to the evolution of their students as well as faculty in the aspects of innovative product design and high-end research activities. The students in the department have won various accolades in this regard at State and National Levels. Further, faculty are highly motivated to plan and execute research activities that involves collaboration from Government agencies like Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Centre for Disability Studies (CDS), Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSE), Energy Management Centre, Kerala etc. to name a few. The Department is also team member in the establishment of Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure in Universities and Higher Educational Institutions (FIST) Program funded at Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India at Amal Jyothi. The research funding received from these agencies have also been used to develop experimental set ups and establish state of the art research facilities at the institute like Cryogenic Treatment Plant for sub-zero temperature material processing, Composite development facility using vacuum bagging technique, Coordinate Measuring Machine for high precision contact-based measurements etc. The Department also possess an Additive Manufacturing Zone, which exclusively serve as a hub for students as well as faculty to conceptualize, design and realize their ideas as a product or prototype using the concepts of Computer Aided Designing and 3D printing.
Alongside these activities, keeping the aspects of technological updation and skill enhancement aspects, the department strive to organize Workshops, Training programmes, Faculty Development Programmes, Conferences and Technical Talks with the support of Institutional and Professional bodies like Association of Mechanical Engineering, AJCE (AME – AJCE), Institution of Engineers (India) (IE(I)), Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), National Institution for Quality and Reliability (NIQR), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), Society of Energy Engineers & Managers (SEEM), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) etc. on a regular basis. Apart from the technical activities, the students also have avenues to lead or be a part of the Intra – Inter College level Technical – Cultural events hosted by the Department as well as the Institute.
The department boasts of its alumni placed around the globe in MNC’s, and Public sector companies setting new standards in life and work. Considerable portion are with higher studies in prestigious institutes at home and abroad. Currently the department is backed up by 28 highly qualified and motivated teaching and 10 non- teaching staff.
